October 13 Four cheers for Paul Krugman by Dani Rodrik"Three of them for having won (highly deservedly) the Nobel prize and one for having been a beacon of light and guidance during the latest crisis..."
---by Dani Rodrik
Well, there might be a revival of location choice study in international economics (New Economy Geography), say, agglomeration. Also, I think that Helpman deserves co-winner due to New Trade Theory. October 12 A Finding in Favour of China's Rising ExportsI first got to know this finding when I attended the presentation by John Romalis in Midwest International Economics Conference. It is interesting and exciting. But I am not sure about this if we think about classic trade theory, in particular, Stolper-Samuelson Theorem. It might be very interesting to look more about it.
This remarkable finding is that
the rise of Chinese trade has helped reduce the relative price index of the poor by around 0.3 percentage points per year. This effect alone can offset around 30 percent of the rise in official inequality we have seen over this period.
(I was marking students' midterms with a question related to Stolper-Samuelson Theorem yesterday. It seems to me that some classic theories remain vital and they might spur new subsequent research around some central issues.)
